5 DIY Face Mask Tutorials using fabric – homemade masks

With the recent spread of coronavirus and difficulty finding surgical face masks ,if you can’t buy face mask at a local store or want DIY  face masks at home by yourself.  Use the pattern for making surgical face masks at home, it ‘s easy,let do it.

DIY face masks are not as effective as the N95 filtration mask recommended by the CDC.

I strongly caution all my readers to follow health officials’ directions before spending lots of time making DIY surgical masks. Here is a statement from the CDC regarding homemade fabric face masks:

HCP {healthcare personnel} use of homemade masks:
In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE {personal protective equipment}, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

So if you really must have one, and you have a room full of fabric and sewing supplies and no other way to get a surgical face mask – here are some free tutorials and patterns for making one.

I suggest making your own face masks as a last resort only as suggested by the CDC.

Some hospitals and clinics (like below one) are accepting donations of homemade face masks. Please call first to ask if they are accepting them.

 

This free face mask pattern from Craft Passion is easy to sew and she includes instructions for adding a pocket inside to hold further filtration material.

The Health Ministry of Cuba released a video tutorial teaching how to sew a DIY face mask. The video is in Spanish, but it’s easy to understand regardless.

Riley Blake Designs shared a really great tutorial showing how to make a face mask cover. Perhaps a filtering material could be placed inside if no surgical face masks are available.
